The Local Government Pension Scheme (Scotland) covers council staff and many other public-sector workers. From April 2026 the bands were restructured to 5 tiers, from 5.5% up to 12%. Unlike the NHS and teachers' schemes, your tier is based on your actual pensionable pay, not a full-time-equivalent figure.
Employer rates vary by fund (the Scotland-wide average is about 17.5%). LGPS is career average (CARE) with a generous 1/49th accrual rate, revalued by CPI. Contributions come from gross pay before tax, so relief is automatic at your marginal Scottish rate.
