Why MoneySCOT exists

Scotland has 2.7 million income tax payers, a unique 6-band tax system, its own property tax (LBTT instead of Stamp Duty), devolved benefits administered by Social Security Scotland, separate landlord and tenancy law, and a distinct succession system with automatic legal rights. Almost none of the major UK finance tools handle all of this correctly.

Legal & General's salary sacrifice calculator explicitly states it doesn't support Scottish taxpayers. ANNA Money's does too. Most UK mortgage, pension, and inheritance tools either exclude Scotland or ignore the differences entirely. MoneySCOT exists to fill that gap — to be the site Scottish earners, parents, landlords, and retirees can rely on.

What we do

• 03Always current. Every calculator updates within 48 hours of a Scottish Budget or tax year change. All rates come directly from Revenue Scotland and HMRC.
• 04Scotland vs England, honestly. Every relevant calculator shows you what you'd pay south of the border too. No spin — just the actual difference in pounds.

Editorial standards

We take accuracy seriously. Every article and calculator is held to the same standards:

• Primary sources only. Tax rates, thresholds, and rules are sourced directly from Revenue Scotland, HMRC, mygov.scot, Scottish Government policy papers, and primary legislation. No scraping, no second-hand summaries.
• One source of truth. All tax rates across the site live in a single code file (tax-rates-2026-27.ts). When rates change, we update one file and every calculator and article updates with it — so nothing ever drifts out of sync.
• No AI-generated filler. Every article is researched, drafted, and fact-checked by a human editor. We use AI tools for research assistance and copyediting, never for unreviewed content generation.
• Worked examples. Every article that involves numbers includes at least one worked example at real Scottish salaries or property prices. No abstract “how it works” pieces without real maths.
• Corrections published openly. If we get something wrong, we fix it and note the date. Email hello@moneyscot.co.uk if you spot an error.

Who runs MoneySCOT

MoneySCOT is run by Gary, a Glasgow-based web developer. He built the site after getting fed up with UK personal finance tools that either excluded Scotland entirely or supported it badly — Legal & General's salary sacrifice calculator literally states it doesn't handle Scottish taxpayers. Gary writes and fact-checks every article, builds every calculator, and updates all the tax rates each April and after every Scottish Budget.

MoneySCOT is privately owned, independent, and not part of any larger network. It isn't backed by a financial services firm and isn't affiliated with any government department. It's a personal project that became useful enough to publish publicly.

How we fund MoneySCOT

MoneySCOT is free to use. No paywalls, no account requirements, no premium tier. We fund the site through two channels:

• Affiliate partnerships. Some articles contain affiliate links to financial products or services we think are relevant. If you click through and sign up or purchase, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. These are always disclosed and never affect what we recommend.
• Paid digital products. We sell a small number of Scotland-specific spreadsheets and planning tools (such as the £100k Trap Pension Workbook and the Side Hustle Tax Tracker). These are one-off purchases, not subscriptions.

Affiliate partnerships never influence our editorial content. We review and recommend tools we'd recommend without a commission, not the other way around.

Privacy & trust

All calculator computations happen in your browser. We never send, store, or see the financial figures you enter. We do use Google Analytics 4 to understand traffic patterns, but this only collects anonymised data. Read our full privacy policy for the details.
