Social Security Scotland administers a growing number of benefits that are distinct from — and often more generous than — their UK Government equivalents. These sit alongside UK-wide benefits (Universal Credit, State Pension, etc.) that continue to be paid by the DWP.
Key Scottish differences include: no face-to-face assessment by default for ADP; the Scottish Child Payment (no UK equivalent); a guaranteed Winter Heating Payment regardless of temperature; and the Two Child Limit Payment (unique to Scotland in 2026/27).
Scottish Child Payment is paid to families with children under 16 (or under 20 if in approved education or training) who receive a qualifying benefit.

Best Start Grant provides three separate one-off payments to families at key milestones during a child's early years: during pregnancy or after birth, when the child is 2–3½ years old, and when they start school.
