Salary & Benefits
Work out your statutory redundancy pay from your age, service and salary — plus the Scottish income tax on anything above the £30,000 tax-free threshold.

Enter your age, service and salary to see your redundancy entitlement — and how much of it you keep after Scottish tax.
This estimates your average weekly pay as salary ÷ 52. Your employer uses your actual average over the 12 weeks before the notice date, so regular overtime, commission or a recent pay change will shift the real figure. Statutory redundancy pay is a legal minimum — always check your contract for an enhanced scheme.
Statutory redundancy pay is set by the Employment Rights Act 1996 and is the same across the whole UK. Three things drive it: your age, your length of service, and your weekly pay.
| Age during each year worked | Entitlement per year |
|---|---|
| Under 22 | Half a week's pay |
| 22 to 40 | One week's pay |
| 41 and over | One and a half weeks' pay |
The detail people get wrong: the band applies to the age you were during each year of service, not your age now. Someone made redundant at 45 after 22 years hasn't earned 1.5 weeks for every year — only the four years worked from 41 onwards get the higher rate.
| Cap | 2026/27 |
|---|---|
| Years of service counted | 20 (the most recent) |
| Weekly pay | £751 |
| Overall payment | £22,530 |
These are uprated every April. The weekly cap bites early — anyone earning above about £39,000 a year is already capped, so a £45,000 earner and a £95,000 earner get exactly the same statutory redundancy pay.
The entitlement is UK-wide. The tax is not. The first £30,000 of a redundancy payment is tax-free everywhere in the UK, but anything above it is taxed as income — and income tax is devolved. A Scottish taxpayer pays Scottish rates on that excess, which above roughly £30,000 of total income means a bigger bill than the same package would attract in England.
Statutory redundancy pay alone never reaches the threshold: the maximum is £22,530, comfortably under £30,000. The Scottish angle only matters once an enhanced or ex-gratia payment lifts the package above it. See the full redundancy pay guide for Scotland for worked examples.
